No More Traffic Jam? Flying Cars to Carry Passengers

HiTouch 07 June 2018

Guangzhou's traffic is notorious around the country, adding more roads or more lanes cannot help change anything, Guangzhou has already had a complex overpass highway system with criss-cross lanes, but passengers are still wasting too much time on traffic jams everyday. Drivers are even worse, a feeling of anxiety, annoyance, tension arise when stuck in traffic jams but could do nothing.

New Rule to decrease traffic congestions

Starting from July 1, Guangzhou will implement a rule to restrict nonlocal vehicles and has just released a document for more details.

According to the document, nonlocal vehicles are only allowed on Guangzhou roads within a designated area for a maximum of four running days, and can only run on Guangzhou roads within the designated area again after a minimum interval of another four consecutive days.

Emergency vehicles, such as fire engines, military vehicles, police cars, ambulance & rescue vehicles, passenger service vehicles with a Road Transport Certificate, as well as vehicles with dual license plates for Hong Kong and Macao or consular license plates, will be exempt from the restrictions.

Can Guangzhou succeed in overcoming traffic jams that brought by the high density?

1. Population control

In Guangzhou's regulatory plan, Guangzhou is expected to limit its population to 20 million but will develop its infrastructure and public service facilities to accommodate citizens of up to 25 million. Since the city's resident population stood at 14.5 million at 2017, Guangzhou must control its population growth at 333,000 annually through 2035.

2. Rapid underground transportation system

Guangzhou's population density reaches 1,739 per person /?km2, it plans to upgrade to its "Chips program". With above 6% floor area ratio, there will be two centers that only allow public buses and bicycle on the ground, private cars go underground.

It provides a better community for residents to interact, share and learn. These high-density centers are the chips of the city, fasten the urbanization, and to integrate innovative ideas.

Guangzhou's city transportation plan is quite similar to Elon Musk's very rapid underground transportation system, there will be a magnetic framework which will push the cars across the tunnels, reserving fossil fuels.

3. Replacing vehicles with drones

Inspired by Amazon’s drone pilot program for short-distance deliveries, Chinese courier company SF Express is looking at drone technology to do inner-city tasks.

Uber has shared more details on a flying car that could eventually transport you around cities. Uber is revealing new concept images that shed light on what it’s hoping will be the flying cars that carry passengers in the future.

4. Tracking Pedestrian Traffic

Previously, China has installed about 20 million AI-equipped CCTV cameras have been, taking the example of Las Vegas to address traffic congestion and catch jaywalkers by understanding pedestrian traffic.

Las Vegas is using this technology to not only track how many vehicles go through a given intersection at different times but how many pedestrians are crossing streets — so the city can reroute vehicle traffic at times of high pedestrian traffic, and so on. The city can also get alerts when a pedestrian is in a roadway when the light is about to change so they can delay the light if needed, increasing the safety of the streets as well.

What is your opinion?

Netizens on Quora talking about best solutions for traffic jam issues in large cities, adaptive traffic control systems and increasing public transit routes are suggested. How do you think?
